At the end of March, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops caught the attention of the Reiki community and the mainstream press when they issued guidelines saying "Reiki therapy is not compatible with either Christian teaching or scientific evidence" and is "inappropriate for Catholic institutions." You can read the document here: http://www.usccb.org/dpp/Evaluation_Guidelines_finaltext_2009-03.pdf
The blog Reiki Digest rebutted the Bishops' arguments the next day:

A few days later they published a follow-up post including links to media coverage:

Chicago Healing Studio is just flattered that Reiki is on the Bishops' radar. We do wish they'd read the research on PubMed.gov, though, since the scientific evidence is piling up in favor of energy healing.
Energy Healing Reduces Pain
Researchers reviewed five pain treatment studies examining Therapeutic Touch (TT), a type of energy healing similar to Reiki. All of the studies, completed between 1997 and 2004, showed "statistically significant positive results." The authors concluded that because there were no identified risks to energy healing, it should be considered for pain treatment.

Energy Healing Helps Spanish Preterm Infants, Too
The February e-newsletter included a Canadian study published in December that found TT improved heart period variability (HPV) in 20 preterm infants. A month later, a Spanish medical journal published a study of 78 preterm infants at the Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena in Seville. Compared to the control group, infants treated with TT had shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and more weight gain.
